National Assembly approved suspension of mandate of 25 MPLA deputies

The National Assembly approved this Thursday the suspension of the mandate of 25 deputies from the parliamentary group of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) due to incompatibility of functions, at the first meeting of the new legislature.

In the list of deputies who suspended their mandates by the national and provincial circle, the names of Bornito de Sousa, former vice-president, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, former president of the National Assembly, Adão de Almeida, minister of State and Chief of Staff of the President of the Republic, Manuel Nunes Júnior, Minister of State for Economic Coordination, and Ana Dias Lourenço, First Lady.

Ana Paula de Carvalho, the former governor of Luanda, appointed in the new government as Minister of the Environment, and in provincial circles the deputies who were appointed governors of the country's 18 provinces were also suspended.

In this Thursday's session, the deputy of the parliamentary group of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Franco Marcolino Nhani, took office, as he was absent on the day of the investiture of the deputies.

In the first ordinary plenary meeting of the first legislative session, of the IV legislature, the constitution and name of ten specialized work committees of the National Assembly was also approved.

The parliament approved the constitution of committees on Constitutional and Legal Affairs (1st), Defense and Security, Internal Order, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland (2nd), Foreign Relations, International Cooperation and Angolan Communities Abroad (3rd), State and Local Government Administration (4th), and Economy and Finance (5th).

Committees on Health, Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology (6th), Culture, Religious Affairs, Media, Youth and Sports (7th), Family, Childhood and Social Action (8th), Mandates, Ethics and Parliamentary Decorum (9th), and on Human Rights, Petitions, Complaints and Citizens' Suggestions (10th) were also created.

The MPLA, taking into account the principle of proportionality, will lead six of the ten specialized working committees, the rest being chaired by UNITA.

The MPLA was assigned the presidency of the first commission (directed by Joaquim Reis Júnior), the second (Ruth Mendes), the fifth (Aia-Eza Troso), the sixth (Victor Kagibanga), the ninth (Sérgio Vaz), and the tenth (Virgil Tyova).

UNITA will lead the third commission (directed by Alcides Sakala Simões), the fourth (Franco Marcolino Nhani), the seventh (Conceição Paulo), and the eighth commission (Clarice Mukinda).

At this Thursday's session, the National Assembly also approved the constitution of the National Assembly's board of directors, chaired by MPLA deputy Susana de Melo, the composition of the group of women parliamentarians, chaired by Teresa da Silva Neto, and the permanent committee of the National Assembly, led by Carolina Cerqueira.

The President of the National Assembly announced that the next plenary meeting is scheduled for 24 November.
