Angola leaves the British "red list"

Angola, Mozambique, Brazil and Cape Verde will leave the "red list" of countries subject to hotel quarantine next week upon arrival in England, which is reduced to seven countries and territories, announced this Thursday the British Government.

The change takes effect on Monday, in time for the mid-term school holidays, in the last week of October.

Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, Panama, Peru and Venezuela are the only countries that remain on the "red list" as they are considered to be at higher risk for containing the covid-19 pandemic.

In all, 47 countries and territories have left the list, whose travelers are no longer subject to a 10-day quarantine at a designated hotel at a cost of £2285, plus tests on the second and eighth days.

The British Government also announced that another 37 countries, including Brazil and India, will also have their vaccines recognized for entry into the country, eliminating the need for pre-departure tests.

New Delhi had expressed outrage at London for not recognizing the Indian-produced version of the AstraZeneca vaccine, for which it retaliated and imposed several restrictions on UK visitors.

However, this expansion does not include the remaining Portuguese-speaking countries (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor and Equatorial Guinea), whose citizens still do not have recognized vaccines.

Transport Minister Grant Shapps said the easing of the restrictions will allow families and friends to reunite and travel to tourist destinations with different seasons, "in part thanks to increased vaccination efforts around the world."

"Restoring people's confidence in travel is the key to rebuilding our economy," he added.

Rules in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are decided by the respective autonomous governments, which have aligned themselves with the English system.

Since Monday, a simplified system of restrictions has been in place, which has eliminated pre-departure tests on entry into the UK.

All travelers, except children under 5 years old, are still required to pay for a PCR test within the first 48 hours after arrival, which should become a cheaper antigen test before the end of the month.

Travelers from countries that are not on the "red list" that are not vaccinated, are only partially vaccinated or do not have the vaccines recognized by the British authorities are required to submit pre-departure tests, take tests on the second and eighth days and comply with quarantine of 10 days, which can be at the residence or at another location of your choice.

Covid-19 has caused at least 4,822,267 deaths worldwide, among more than 236.23 million infections by the new coronavirus registered since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the most recent report by the Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in several countries.
