MPLA Political Bureau reaffirms João Lourenço's leadership

The Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the MPLA, party in power in Angola, met this Friday to analyze internal matters, such as the preparation of its VIII ordinary congress, and reaffirmed the leadership of the current president, João Lourenço.

According to the final communiqué of the meeting, chaired by the leader of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), João Lourenço, in relation to the congress, which will take place from 9 to 11 December this year, the Political Bureau approved the preliminary draft of adjustment to the MPLA Program, the draft adjustment to the party's statutes and the set of documents referring to the holding of the event, to be submitted for approval by the Central Committee at its next meeting.

The meeting also served to analyze the report on the regional meetings of the executive secretariats of the MPLA's intermediate bodies, an initiative that served to intensify the work of political-electoral mobilization and "reaffirm the leadership of comrade president João Lourenço".

João Lourenço formalized this week his re-candidacy for the MPLA leadership with 21,750 signatures.

The MPLA president and head of state was the first militant of the party in power in Angola to formalize his candidacy for the party's leadership, aiming at the ordinary congress of political formation.

The process of submitting candidatures, within the scope of this congress, started on the 20th of this month and runs until November 5th and the verification of their compliance takes place until November 6th.

Each candidacy must be supported by 2000 signatures, coming from 100 militants registered in each of the 18 provinces.

António Venâncio, MPLA militant for 48 years, was the first to announce his candidacy for the leadership of the ruling party in Angola at the next congress, aiming for a more "prestigious" and democratic institution, having not yet formalized such a claim.

The proposal to expand the composition of the Luanda provincial committee was also appreciated and approved at the meeting this Friday.

The Political Bureau appreciated the draft directive on the commemorations of the centenary of the birth of António Agostinho Neto, first President of Angola, to "reveal the figure of the founding comrade president of the nation and extol his political, intellectual and cultural legacy".

In the communiqué, the MPLA Political Bureau called on the Angolan people to commemorate the day of national independence, to be marked on November 11, "with joy and patriotism, as a symbol of unity and cohesion around the ideals of the Angolan homeland".
