João Lourenço says there is a need to develop and elevate the tourism sector

The development of national tourism and the need to raise it to the level of the country's real potential were defended this Friday by João Lourenço.

The President, who was speaking at the swearing-in act of Filipe Zau as the new minister of Culture, Tourism and Environment, considered that the tourism sector is one of the areas of the national economy that is still underexplored and highlighted the important role played by the ministry of Culture, Tourism and Environment plays "in the life and culture of the Angolan people, so it must be protected and promoted".

"The culture of a people is something that must be protected, must be promoted, tourism is one of the branches of our economy that, unfortunately, is underdeveloped and we need to bring it to the level of the potential that Angola has in this domain and the environment that, perhaps by mere coincidence, at the moment it takes office, the climate summit begins in Glasgow, since if we don't take care of the environment, if we don't take care of the climate, we jeopardize the very survival of humanity" , he said.

The President underlined that Filipe Zau, nominated Thursday in place of Jomo Fortunato, has "a very great responsibility" ahead of him.

"But we trust in their abilities, in their training, in their dedication, in their way of facing challenges and we believe that in any of these areas we will do well", he stressed.

Speaking to the press, Filipe Zau highlighted that environmental issues have been quite neglected, highlighting the problem of fires and solid waste, "issues that ultimately lead to major climate change".

"This is a serious problem, it is a transversal problem, it is not just the Ministry, but it is a problem that affects the entire exercise of citizenship of each one of us. It often starts even in the garbage, as we separate the garbage in our homes, we have to learn to live with the new situations that arise for sustainability issues," he said.

Filipe Zau revealed that he will bring people with sensitivity to these issues together to work with him.

"These will be steps that we have to see how we are going to solve, but I think there are three important aspects, some of them interconnected and, therefore, the public policies that will have to be done around this are very involved in the issues to diagnose, analyze, predict and from there we will see solutions and the best solutions we can find to solve the problems", he stressed.
