Covid-19: pandemic caused 217,483 deaths and infected 8,476,312 people in Africa

The number of deaths associated with covid-19 in Africa reached 217,483 in the last 24 hours, with the region accounting for 8,476,312 infected, of which 7,868,860 patients recovered, according to the most recent official data.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 3,922,173 cases and 111,094 deaths associated with covid-19.

This region is home to the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,920,109 cases and 88,987 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, has today reached 2,582,838 SARS-CoV-2 virus infections and 70,017 deaths associated with covid-19.

East Africa has 1,047,205 infections and 22,770, and the West African region has 661,168 cases of infection and 9925 deaths. Central Africa has the fewest cases of infection and deaths, 262,928 cases and 3677 deaths, respectively.

Tunisia, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 25,213 dead and 712,013 infected, followed by Egypt, with 18,375 dead and 326,379 cases, and Morocco, with 944,803 infections, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, 14,636 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the most affected countries are Ethiopia, with 6,393 fatalities and 363,240 infections, Algeria, with 5,899 deaths and 205,990 infected people, and Kenya, with 5,263 deaths associated with the disease and 252,839 accumulated infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique accounts for 1,929 deaths associated with the disease and 151,243 infected people accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Angola (1,709 deaths and 64,033 cases), Cape Verde (349 deaths and 38,151 infections), Equatorial Guinea (163 deaths and 13,166 cases), Guinea-Bissau (141 dead and 6131 infected) and São Tomé and Príncipe (56 deaths and 3697 infections).
