Covid-19: Africa with 294 more deaths and 11,549 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 294 deaths associated with covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 213,093 and 11,549 new infections, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the cumulative total of cases of infection on the continent since the start of the pandemic is now 8,363,382 and that of recovered is 7,709,460, plus 10,438 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 3,898,131 cases and 109,835 deaths associated with covid-19. This region is home to the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,908,768 cases and 87,981 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, has reached 2,541,224 SARS-CoV-2 virus infections and 68,315 deaths associated with covid-19.

East Africa has 1,022,317 infections and 21,799 deaths, and the West Africa region has 651,408 infections and 9647 deaths. Central Africa has the fewest cases of infection and deaths, 250,302 and 3497 respectively.

Tunisia, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 24,971 deaths and 709,001 infected, followed by Egypt, with 17,545 deaths and 309,135 cases, and Morocco, with 936,963 infections, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, 14,390 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the countries most affected are also Algeria, with 5837 deaths and 204,171 people infected, Ethiopia, with 5843 deaths and 351,388 infections, and Kenya, with 5175 deaths associated with the disease and 250,510 accumulated infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique accounts for 1919 deaths associated with the disease and 150,874 infected accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Angola (1598 deaths and 60,448 cases), Cape Verde (345 deaths and 37,770 infections), Equatorial Guinea (150 deaths and 12,532 cases), Guinea-Bissau (135 deaths and 6112 infected) and São Tomé and Príncipe (55 deaths and 3584 infections).
