Activists call for a manifestation to ask for the resignation of Edeltrudes Costa

Activists called for Saturday a demonstration demanding the resignation of the head of the office of the President of the Republic, Edeltrudes Costa, who has allegedly been favored by the state in millionaire contracts.

Last Saturday, Luanda was also the scene of protests, with an unemployment march, organized by young people, and of those injured in Build Angola's housing projects who claim to have been victims of fraud and demand justice.

Speaking to Lusa, Benedito Jeremias "Dito Dali," one of the organizers, said the aim "is to demand the President of the Republic to immediately remove Edeltrudes Costa for being involved in illicit deals and alleged illicit money transfers abroad.

Meanwhile, "Angolans lack medicine in hospitals, lack doctors, lack jobs for young people," said Dito Dali, noting that unemployment in Angola "is rampant".

The activist considered that Edeltrudes Costa is unable to continue in government and should be removed, calling for political and criminal accountability of the chief of staff and criticizing the silence of João Lourenço.

"The President of the Republic remains silent. This silence compromises public institutions and the very image of the President", he stressed.

The activist said that signatures will be collected during the demonstration and that they will then be sent to the President and the Attorney General's Office, with which they intend to file a public denunciation.

The protest is being called by the social networks and is scheduled to take place at 11am in Largo da Independência (1st of May).

The case, which was recently reported by television station TVI, involves the hiring of a consulting firm from Edeltrudes Costa in a business that aimed to modernize Angolan airports and will have yielded several million euros in public contracts that were authorized by the head of state.

The money will have been used to buy luxury homes in Sintra and Cascais, in the Lisbon district.

Last week, the leader of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) expressed concern about the involvement of a "relevant figure" of the Presidency of the Republic in acts of alleged business favouritism.

At stake are "quite serious accusations of violation of transparency and the Law of Public Probity, including with the indication that these violations were possible, because they were also signed by the President of the Republic," said Adalberto da Costa Júnior.
