João Lourenço asks young people not to let themselves be manipulated by those who cannot solve problems

João Lourenço appealed this Thursday to young people "not to allow themselves to be manipulated" by those who are unable to solve their problems in education, health, housing and employment.

The President was speaking, as leader of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), at the opening of the IV ordinary session of the Central Committee, which will analyze not only internal issues, but also the situation of transport and communication routes, as well as the Integrated Plan of the Municipalities, any of which generate employment.

The observation made by the leader of the party that governs the country comes after several demonstrations held in recent times in the country, in which young people have collected the electoral promise of the creation of 500 thousand jobs and the social and economic degradation of the population.

The most recent one, last Saturday in Luanda, came from civil society and had the support of UNITA, and was repressed by the police, with confrontations and more than 100 demonstrators arrested.

According to João Lourenço, "these problems are already being resolved, as far as possible, by the executive and its partners, the private business sector".

The head of state stressed in his speech that the youth constitute a majority of the population, of which the authorities are proud.

"The youth has a responsibility towards the country and the country also has a responsibility towards the youth", said João Lourenço, stressing that despite the covid-19 pandemic, the Executive "has seriously bet on the internal production of basic agricultural and industrial consumer goods, not only to increase internal supply and reduce exports, but also to guarantee more jobs for the citizens and particularly for the youth".

João Lourenço recalled that important industries built with public money, and which have been paralyzed for years by harmful management, will soon come into operation as part of the ongoing privatization program, "which will guarantee to increase the current supply of employment for young people".

The leader of the MPLA stressed that in Angola, as worldwide, the harmful effects of covid-19 have made the labor market contract, "because there are companies that close and others that, due to compliance with measures imposed by the state of emergency or the state of public calamity, work with only a part of its workforce".

"But at the same time we have seen with satisfaction the opening of new industrial production units, by companies that used to import to commercialize, but that in face of the executive policies of production incentive started to produce these same goods in national territory, which is very encouraging," he said.

"The effort that the executive and the private business sector have been making in maintaining and creating jobs is visible in the eyes of all, but full employment is not achieved in times of economic crisis and deep world pandemic, this miracle has not yet been performed by anyone, so it is not expected to happen in Angola overnight," he noted.
