Portuguese-Angolan football coach Lázaro Oliveira will leave the Macau men's team and said this Friday that he intends to return to coaching a professional club, in Portugal or abroad, in statements to Lusa.

The coach's contract with the Macau Football Association (AFM) ends on Monday and the two parties have reached "a mutual decision" not to renew it, Oliveira said.

"We have different opinions about what the future of the national team should be" from the semi-autonomous Chinese region, Oliveira explained.

The coach said that, as a professional coach, "it doesn't make sense at this moment to be without objectives and for things to continue as they are, that is, there will be no more international matches and training will continue".

The Macau national team is made up of amateur players, who, Lázaro lamented, "are often not available for training and matches for professional reasons".

The team has only played four official matches in the last 12 months. The last ones were on 6 and 10 September, with two defeats against Brunei, which eliminated Macau from qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup.

"It is not beneficial for me, it is not beneficial for the Association to have a professional coach to come here and compete once or twice a year", said the coach, adding that "it also does not contribute much to the progression of the careers", his and that of the assistant coach, the Portuguese Pedro Simões.

Macau was one of the last football teams to return to matches, in March 2023, after a break of almost four years imposed by the 'zero covid' policy, which included restrictions on entry and quarantines that reached 28 days.

"That also contributed a lot" to slowing down the development of local football, lamented Lázaro.

Still, the Portuguese-Angolan said that the first adventure abroad was "a positive experience" and argued that the next coach will have "a much better situation", especially after overcoming a conflict between the players and the AFM.

In June 2019, a goal by Filipe Duarte, a Benfica graduate, secured Macau's first victory in World Cup qualifying, beating Sri Lanka 1-0 at home.

But the team ended up not progressing, as the AFM decided not to send the team to play the second leg in Sri Lanka, for security reasons, after more than 250 people died in bomb attacks on April 21, 2019.

"We had to do some groundwork, to convince the players to return to the national team", recalled the coach.

Lázaro Oliveira will now seek, "whether in Portugal or abroad, to try to return to activity as soon as possible", in a professional club.
