"Reaching the target of accessing 50 percent of the electricity rate represents the implementation of more than 1,250 new household connections throughout the country," reads a government statement, which reports on the minister's announcement made during the 13th Energy and Water Consultative Council, which is taking place in Luanda.
"Currently, Angola has access rates to electricity and drinking water at levels of 44 and 56 percent, despite the significant investments already made," the statement adds.
According to the government official, "it is crucial that the sector becomes increasingly better equipped to guarantee the sustainability of the activity it carries out, which implies having an effective capacity to maintain existing infrastructures, compliance with good practices in public management, efficiency in revenue management, adequate technical capacity of the technical staff of companies and institutes, among other conditions," reads the text sent to Lusa.
João Baptista Borges reported that a series of projects are underway in the water sector, valued at over 500 million dollars, which include the rehabilitation and modernization of water supply systems in several locations in the country, institutional capacity building for provincial water and sanitation companies and the design of sanitation systems for seven coastal cities, among others.
The meeting of the Consultative Council took place at the Venâncio de Moura Diplomatic Academy, under the theme 'Energy and Water, challenges and solutions for the expansion and sustainability of the sector', and discussed ideas and solutions for the future of the Energy and Water sector in the country.
