Four hundred members of the School Security Brigade ensure security in schools during the current academic year

In order to ensure public safety in general education schools in the capital, throughout the current academic year, the School Security Brigade (BSE) has mobilised a total of 400 staff. The information was provided by Bartolomeu Campos, commander of that body, who, according to him, has all the plans ready to guarantee security in public and private general education schools.

In this sense, the body attached to the Luanda Provincial Command of the National Police has more than 400 officers in Luanda to ensure the security of 4332 educational establishments, both public, private and public-private.

Bartolomeu Campos said that the activity is based more on "partnerships", and that they currently have "established the bases" in several educational institutions in Luanda: "Regardless of the numbers, our activity is more based on partnerships and we currently have established the bases in several schools in the capital", he said, quoted by Jornal de Angola.

According to the commander, the BSE's activities are aimed, above all, at preventing crimes in schools.

"There is an idea that the police in general are only a repressive force, but the school brigade's actions are more focused on the pedagogical and proactive aspect", said the official, explaining that the officers carry out actions to prevent crime in schools in order to ensure that students can concentrate on their studies without worries.

Although the number of officers is not compatible with the educational institutions, he added that, in terms of municipalities, the brigade has a post, intervening according to priorities, explaining that they maintain "fixed patrols in schools that have shown some insecurity", while in others the patrols are random.

"We maintain fixed patrols in schools that have shown some insecurity. In the others, we carry out random patrols, where we try to maintain regular contact with the management", he said, quoted by Jornal de Angola.

The commander admitted that, given the number of schools and staff available, they have not been able to have a permanent officer in each school simultaneously, and in order to overcome this situation, the department has partnerships with the management of schools, youth associations, and student groups.

As for the schools considered to be of greatest concern, the commander acknowledged that there are schools in each municipality of Luanda, giving as an example, in the municipality of Luanda, the Largo das Escolas: "The students who study there come from various areas of the city and, with the fusion of behaviors, the tendency is for criminal actions to occur, mainly fights".

Bartolomeu Campos also pointed out other examples that have deserved the attention of the brigade, such as the Industrial Polytechnic Institute of Luanda and Alda Lara. According to the official, quoted by Jornal de Angola, some institutions in Largo da Preparatória (in Viana), as well as in Cacuaco, Belas and Cazenga, have also been on the brigade's radar.

In terms of numbers, in 2023, 243 crimes were recorded by the body, as well as the arrest of 250 people, 142 of whom were minors, pointed out the person in charge, who added: "The most common crimes were against physical integrity, the use of narcotics, robberies and thefts".
