Higher Education: Vice-President opens academic year. INAGBE announces grants

The solemn opening act of the new academic year (2023/2024) of higher education, which takes place this Thursday, will be presided over by Esperança da Costa, Vice-President of the Republic. In terms of scholarships, the National Institute for Scholarship Management (INAGBE) will make 10,000 new internal scholarships available.

Classes are expected to begin on the first Monday in October (2nd October). According to Angop, the school calendar will consist of 42 academic weeks, which will be divided into two semesters of 21 weeks each, as well as nine weeks of preparation, the conclusion of which is scheduled for July.

The solemn opening ceremony of the new academic year will take place at the Academy of Social Sciences and Technologies and, according to Angop, will be attended by Esperança da Costa.

10 thousand new internal scholarships available

INAGBE will provide a total of 10 thousand new internal scholarships for the new academic year. The information was provided by the Minister of Higher Education, Maria do Rosário Bragança, when she spoke within the scope of the first National Forum on Scholarship Attribution and Management Policies.

"We take this moment to announce that for the 23/24 academic year, whose solemn opening ceremony will take place tomorrow, INAGBE will make available 10 thousand new internal scholarships, 9500 new undergraduate scholarships and 500 new postgraduate scholarships for master's and doctoral degrees", said the minister, quoted by Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA).

In terms of the number of scholarship holders, the holder of the Higher Education portfolio made it known that the institute currently "controls more than 30 thousand internal scholarship holders and a little more than 1200 scholarship holders abroad".

In terms of scholarships for teachers, according to a statement from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, to which VerAngola had access, a total of 236 teachers submitted applications to INAGBE in order to benefit from scholarships to complete their training.

"INAGBE is carrying out a selection process for teachers from public universities who were undergoing postgraduate training, on their own, in the country or abroad, in the period 2021/2022, with a view to awarding a scholarship for enable them to complete this training and be able to make their qualified contribution to the Higher Education Institutions to which they belong", the note reads.

Thus, the note adds, "236 applications were accepted, of which 73 are approved and 163 are pending".

"In the first case, candidates are able to sign the contract to benefit from the scholarship and, in the second case, they must complete the processes, within a stipulated period, so that they can be accepted", the statement said.

INAGBE, in another statement made available on its website, states that the process of renewing internal scholarships begins on October 2nd, running until the 20th of that month."The National Institute for Scholarship Management (INAGBE) informs higher education institutions, civil society and, in particular, the student community of internal scholarship holders, that the process of renewing internal scholarships will take place from the 2nd to the 20th of October this year", the note reads.
