João Lourenço, also Acting President of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OEACP), spoke on Wednesday night at the opening of the first meeting of the troika of Heads of State and Government of the 76 countries that make up this group.
Addressing his counterparts, he highlighted the importance of collective action, and considered the "spirit of unity" fundamental, so that the countries that make up the organization become stronger and are able to respond to the complex challenges they face.
The head of state pointed out the "particularly difficult moment" that the world is going through with the proliferation of wars, terrorism, coups d'état, climate change and pandemics that bring with them humanitarian, food and energy crises, stressing that these countries are "the first and main victims".
"The most serious thing is the fact that we see that the international institutions created to deal with these types of situations and provide them with a timely solution have demonstrated that they are powerless and have no solutions that are up to the current challenges", criticized the President.
João Lourenço stated that profound reforms of global governance and the United Nations Security Council are needed to better deal with issues of peace and security, as well as financial institutions such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the World Organization Trade, "at a time when we do not see a bright horizon to take our countries out of the prolonged stage of underdevelopment in which they find themselves".
Regarding the OEACP, an organization that brings together 1.5 billion people, from three continents and 79 countries, he stated that it "represents a non-negligible force in the concert of nations", due to its role in building a world of peace and security.
"We have a responsibility that we must assume with unity and cohesion among us to face the challenges of the contemporary world and contribute to overcoming the problems facing us", he appealed, guaranteeing that the Angolan presidency will be "active, inclusive and oriented towards positive results".
In concluding, he reiterated his commitment to the principles and objectives of the OEACP, with a view to achieving the motto of the Luanda Summit: Three Oceans, Three Continents, A Common Destiny and a Resilient and Durable OEACP.
