It was at the 8th Ordinary Meeting of the Council of Ministers, chaired by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, that the nursing profession saw its requests met. The document aims to enable nursing graduates to exercise autonomously and technically differentiated in their area of activity and award the corresponding specialist degree, in order to provide better health care.

The Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, who spoke to the press after the meeting, highlighted that the regulation on Specialized Nursing Training was approved by Presidential Decree, making this a historic milestone in the National Health Service.

“It is important to highlight here that it is the first in the history of the National Health Service to respond, on the one hand, to the needs of the sector in which we want increasingly differentiated professionals and, on the other hand, to respond to the aspirations of the class in alignment with our National Specialized Training Plan for the Health Sector”, he said.

Sílvia Lutucuta highlighted that, in this way, the government will be able to provide the country's technicians and nurses with the necessary skills to improve the provision of health services to the population.

According to the minister, the specialization courses last three years, with a workload that varies between 2000 and 42,400 hours, distributed in a balanced way between theory - 40 percent - and practice - 60 percent - of the curriculum.

The holder of the Health portfolio also mentioned that priority specialties were defined within the scope of specialization courses, which include Nursing in Maternal and Child Health, Emergencies and Trauma, Medical-Surgical, Nephrology, Community Health, Childcare and Pediatrics and Dermatology.

The governor also assured that the specialization program will be constantly evolving, incorporating new specialties whenever possible.
