Accounts made by Expansão, based on data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) included in the survey for the second quarter of 2022, indicate that informality dominates among the economically active population: at the end of June, more than nine million people operated in the informal market and almost five million (4.9 million) were unemployed.

Thus, the more than two million people (2,358,728) operating in the formal market represent only 14 percent of the total number of active people (16,284,279).

INE data, cited by Expansão, indicate that the number of employed people increased by around six percent.

In the second quarter of this year, 11,370,798 Angolans (655,565 more) said they had worked on their own, for others or in family activities for at least one hour, however, most of these people (468,450) ended up having to embark on informal market, writes Expansão.

Informality dominates among employed people. According to the institute, the numbers of the informal market are close to 80 percent.

According to the data, cited by Expansão, almost half of the informal jobs correspond to self-employed workers (49.5 percent), followed by family workers with 29.8 percent and self-consumption workers with 12.2 percent. It was thus concluded that there are more and more people creating an occupation to support themselves since the labor market does not offer answers to cover all active people.

The figures also indicate that rural areas are the ones with the highest levels of informal work, with 95 percent. While in cities, the informal employment rate is around 65 percent, writes Expansão.

The formal market, on the other hand, registered a slight growth: in the time horizon of one year there are 187,113 more formal jobs, as a result of the economic improvement in progress since last year, when it emerged from the recession. However, the economy is still unable to create the formal jobs needed in the country.

With regard to unemployment, according to Expansão, there was a decrease. In year-on-year terms, the number of unemployed people dropped from 4,960,162 in the second quarter of last year to 4,913,481 unemployed in the second quarter of this year.

In urban areas, unemployment has a higher percentage: in the second quarter of 2021 it was at 42.6 percent, having dropped to 40 percent in the second quarter of this year. In rural areas, the numbers went from 16.2 percent in the second quarter of 2021 to 14.3 percent in the second quarter of 2022, writes Expansão.
