Angola’s Humanist Party promises to “humanize institutions” in parliament

The president of the Humanist Party of Angola (PHA), elected deputy for the fifth legislature, declined to comment on whether she will oppose the opposition in parliament, as has been mentioned, promising that she will work to "humanize institutions and people".

Bela Malaquias, who was speaking this Tuesday to journalists at the Angolan parliament's headquarters, in Luanda, where he was part of the process of welcoming the deputies of the fifth Angolan legislature, said that he had a positive expectation about his debut in parliament.

"The expectation is positive, it is a new experience and, as you may know, there is always butterflies in our stomachs, but we are prepared to do our best", said the leader of the PHA, a party created before the elections on 24 August and which elected two deputies.

The PHA leader assured that her party will act "very assertive and ambitious, as was its electoral campaign", with the "humanization of Angola, institutions and people's lives" at the centre.

On whether the Humanist Party, in opposition, will oppose the opposition, in the seat of parliament, as has been reported, Bela Malaquias did not go into details: "This is to ask who says that", he replied to Lusa.

During the electoral campaign, the party leader, with stints at UNITA, criticized some opposition parties.

Regarding the stance of the new government, led by João Lourenço, re-elected President of the Republic for the next five years, Bela Malaquias said he had "no prior expectations."

"Not a special expectation (about the government's performance), I'm going to work to see and to go ahead, now previous expectations are not my strong point", she concluded.

The president of the PHA was the first deputy in the opposition to participate in this reception process, which precedes the investiture of the 220 elected deputies, scheduled for Friday, 16 September.

Deputies from the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) appear in the majority, highlighting the former Minister of State for the Social Area, Carolina Cerqueira, appointed as president of parliament, who has also registered her.

The process of welcoming deputies from the fifth legislature of the parliament began this morning at the institution's headquarters, where the elected deputies carry out a kind of registration. At the entrance, they take a picture, then fill in a form, they are given a login and institutional email, a deputy card and at the end they receive a "kit" containing the legislation and basic parliamentary information.

The presence of deputies elected by UNITA, FNLA and PRS, who are considering not taking office, as a protest against the election results, is eagerly awaited in the main hall of the National Assembly, where the process is taking place.

The outgoing secretary general of the National Assembly, Pedro Agostinho de Neri, told journalists that the participation of elected deputies in this process "is mandatory" and all parties have been informed about the start of the process.
