President and Prime Minister of Portugal congratulate João Lourenço on his re-election

The President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Prime Minister António Costa, congratulated João Lourenço on his re-election as President of Angola, saluting the UNITA leader "for the results obtained".

"After the electoral process ended, with the ruling, yesterday [Thursday] of the Constitutional Court of Angola, the President of the Republic sent a letter to President João Lourenço, congratulating him on his reelection", in the vote of 24 August, according to a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic.

In the note, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also salutes "the main opposition candidate for the results obtained", referring to Adalberto da Costa Júnior, leader of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).

The Portuguese head of state also hopes that "Angolan political life will continue to develop in a climate of freedom, pluralism and tolerance".

The Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, congratulated President João Lourenço, saluting the people of Angola "for the demonstration of enormous civic and political maturity".

“With the electoral process completed in Angola, I congratulate President João Lourenço on his re-election”, says António Costa in a publication on the social network Twitter.

The Portuguese prime minister also saluted "all the parties and candidates that participated in this election, as well as the Angolan people, for the demonstration of enormous civic and political maturity".
