Adalberto Costa Júnior says that an attempt to subvert the will of the people is a crime

The UNITA leader stated that transparency “is vital for the credibility of the electoral process” and stressed that any attempt to subvert the will of the people is a crime against the country.

The expressions are contained in UNITA's final declaration on the electoral process, after the elections of 24 August, presented by the party's president, Adalberto da Costa Júnior, who also showed the parallel count of votes, which gives an advantage to the "maninhos" party. contrary to the results of the National Electoral Commission, which attribute the victory to the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

"No one, neither the President of the Republic nor the ruling party, has the legitimacy or authority to subvert the constitutional order and popular sovereignty", warned the president of UNITA.

"Any attempt to subvert the will of the people, whether through administrative or procedural means, whether through malicious manipulation by the holder of executive power or the abusive use of repressive force, represents a severe blow against the construction of the democratic rule of law, a serious setback in the process of transition to democracy or, better said, a crime against the homeland", he added.

Adalberto da Costa Júnior criticized the "climate of structural disorganization" in which the fifth general elections took place, accusing state institutions of ignoring all warnings from the opposition and civil society for the timely correction and improvement of the processes.

"The institutions trampled on administrative principles, transparency and rigor, all premeditated, to obstruct the will of voters and impose a power that considers itself 'owner of the country'", underlined the UNITA official.

The official pointed out several illegalities in the electoral process, including flaws in the electoral register, non-publication of electoral rolls, existence of deceased citizens among voters, obstruction of the accreditation of list delegates in some municipalities, refusal to deliver summary minutes to delegates list, by some presidents of polling stations; partisanship of the public media, misuse of public resources by the ruling party, and electoral corruption.

"UNITA and all the forces of the broad movement for alternation demand the restoration of electoral truth", highlighted Adalberto da Costa Júnior, who proposed a judicial inspection of all electoral records held by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) and political parties, in order to confirm their authenticity and the comparison of the minutes held by the various competitors with those of the CNE.

CNE president Manuel Pereira da Silva released the final tabulation minutes of the August 24 general elections, which proclaimed the MPLA and its candidate, João Lourenço, as winners with 51.17 percent of the votes, followed by UNITA with 43.95 percent.

With these results, the MPLA elected 124 deputies and UNITA elected 90 deputies, almost double the 2017 elections.

The figures were contradicted this Monday by UNITA, which appealed to the Constitutional Court against the CNE's deliberation on the national tabulation on 29 August, opening an electoral dispute.

The TC rejected an injunction that UNITA presented on Friday, alleging that this procedure was not adequate as it had previously admitted the appeal, with suspensive effects of the CNE's deliberation on the national tabulation minutes.
