Portuguese farmers prepare coffee cultivation in Angola

Portuguese farmers are preparing the ground to invest in coffee cultivation in Angola. Owned by the portuguese group “Irmãos Chaves”, the farm “Irmãos Chaves”, located in the municipality of Lucala, in the province of Cuanza Norte, will cultivate 300 hectares of coffee in the current agricultural season.

For now, the land is being prepared to receive the grain: a process of clearing and preparing the land is in progress.

This bet, according to António Fidalgo, responsible for the farm's production area, aims to revive coffee production in that area and, thus, solve the low levels of coffee production that the province has been experiencing.

Cited by Angop, António Fidalgo added that the farm also plans to advance with the planting of corn.

With about a thousand hectares, the farm saw eight hectares being occupied with various types of vegetables (cabbage, onion, watermelon, cabbage, among others), said the responsible.

Figures from the National Coffee Institute (Inca) in Kwanza Norte indicate that there are 1200 producers in that area, 600 are active.

According to Angop, in the current agricultural season, producers estimate to harvest around 600 tons of coffee, 100 less than last year. This decline is justified by the drought that hit the country between December last year and March this year.

The Irmãos Chaves Business Group has its origins in Portugal, more specifically in Madeira Island. In addition to the Portuguese headquarters, the group is also present in Luanda. It operates in various fields, from civil construction to hotels, having invested in the agricultural sector in Angola, with agricultural production geared towards Angola's internal needs as well as exports.
