Covid-19: Africa with 437 more deaths and 8298 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 437 deaths associated with covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 210,435, and 8298 new infections, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the cumulative total of cases of infection on the continent since the start of the pandemic is now 8,283,763 and that of recovered is 7,612,923, plus 12,677 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 3,873,502 cases and 108,938 deaths associated with covid-19. In this region is the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,897,521 cases and 87,216 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, has today reached 2,515,904 SARS-CoV-2 virus infections and 67,461 deaths associated with covid-19.

East Africa counts 1,011,612 infections and 21,203 deaths, and the West Africa region registers 645,180 cases of infection and 9488 deaths. Central Africa has the fewest cases of infection and deaths, 237,565 and 3,345 respectively.

Tunisia, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 24,794 deaths and 705,474 infected, followed by Egypt, with 17,224 deaths and 302,327 cases, and Morocco, with 929,699 infections, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, 14,199 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the countries most affected are also Algeria, with 5786 deaths and 202,877 people infected, Ethiopia, with 5439 deaths and 342,305 infections, and Kenya, with 5109 deaths associated with the disease and 248,515 accumulated infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique has 1,910 deaths associated with the disease and 150,540 infected since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Angola (1513 deaths and 55,583 cases), Cape Verde (336 deaths and 37,472 infections), Equatorial Guinea (142 deaths and 11,806 cases), Guinea-Bissau (135 deaths and 6113 infected) and São Tomé and Príncipe (47 deaths and 3295 infections).
