Doctors will stop services for an hour in solidarity with an assaulted colleague

The National Union of Doctors of Angola, in solidarity with a colleague attacked by the relatives of a patient in Benguela, called for a stoppage for next Monday, for an hour, in all hospitals in the country.

In a press release, the Angolan Doctors Union recalls that the colleague in question, António Dungula, assigned to the General Hospital of Benguela, was the target of physical aggression "in the course of his activities, after unsuccessfully resuscitating a patient, at the time of communicating the death to the relatives of the same".

For the union, the event constitutes a threat to the good practice of medicine in Angola and a violation of the rights and duties of doctors, outlined in the statutes of the Medical Association of Angola.

"Using the prerogatives of article 92 of OrMed, paragraph e), in a gesture of solidarity with the doctors of Benguela and, in particular with Dr. Dungula, the National Union of Doctors of Angola summons all their children and all medical class in general, to fulfill a stoppage of 60 minutes, in all health units of the Republic of Angola, between 12 pm and 1 pm, on Monday", warn the doctors in the statement.

The communiqué emphasizes that, in respect for the good life, emergencies must respond with half their labor force and full intensive care.

The Benguela provincial Health office also condemned "vehemently" the attitude of physical aggression against the doctor, which took place in the emergency room of the Benguela General Hospital, last Tuesday.

"We understand the pain of family members at the time of the loss of a loved one, however, nothing justifies acts of physical, verbal or psychological aggression against professionals who sacrificed themselves to the mission of caring and treating those who in a moment of pain and health services to seek help they need," stresses the provincial health office of Benguela.

The patient, according to a note from the provincial health office of Benguela, was admitted to the hospital with a complex and highly serious clinical condition, with cardiorespiratory complications, ending in death, "despite the efforts of the medical and nursing team".
