Covid-19: Africa with over 161 deaths and 14,519 new cases in the last 24 hours

In the last 24 hours, the African continent registered over 161 deaths associated with covid-19 and 14,519 new cases of infection by the disease, according to data from the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

According to the Africa CDC, with these new numbers, the total number of cases in Africa rose to 8,096,504, while that of fatal victims now amounts to 204,821 and that of recovered from the disease rises to 7,409,626, 23,741 more than the day before.

The southern African region remains the most affected on the continent, with 3,821,967 cases and 106,813 deaths associated with covid-19. In this region, is the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which registers 2,869,201 cases and 85,468 deaths.

North Africa follows Southern Africa in the numbers of covid-19, reaching in the last 24 hours a total of 2,466,724 cases and 65,906 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa accounts for nearly one million cases (948,542) and 19,625 deaths, and the West Africa region registers 631,513 cases of infection and 9228 deaths.

Central Africa is the least affected by the pandemic with 227,758 cases recorded in total and 3249 deaths associated with the disease.

Tunisia remains the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, with a total of 24,337 deaths and 696,279 infected, followed by Egypt, with 16,908 deaths and 294,482 cases of infection, and Morocco, with 13,729 deaths and 910,991 people infected.

Among the countries most affected are also Algeria, with 5635 deaths and 200,798 infected, Ethiopia, with 5035 fatalities and 327,066 infections, and Kenya, with 4949 deaths associated with the disease and 244,826 recorded cases.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique has 1,898 deaths associated with the disease and 149,671 cases accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Angola (1360 deaths and 51,407 cases), Cape Verde (324 deaths and 36,816 infections), Equatorial Guinea (131 deaths and 10,498 cases), Guinea-Bissau (130 deaths and 6042 infected) and São Tomé and Príncipe (42 deaths and 2893 infections).
