Lightning strikes caused 21 deaths in the last rainy season in Bié province

Electrical discharges caused 21 deaths and 17 injuries in the last rainy season in the province of Bié, the local Civil Protection and Fire Service said.

According to the spokesman of the Civil Protection and Fire Service of Bié, Eurico Davoca, in the period between August 15, 2019 and May 30 this year, 21 people died of lightning strikes in the municipalities of Andulo, Camacupa, Chinguar, Chitembo , Cuito, Cunhinga and Nharea.

At that time, Eurico Davoca continued, in statements issued by public radio, the rays injured 17 people in the municipalities of Andulo, Camacupa, Chinguar, Chitembo, Cuito and Cunhinga.

Following the latest floods, the first of the current rainy season, which started in August, eight people are still hospitalized with injuries caused by electrical discharges.

The director general of the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (Inamet), Domingos do Nascimento, said that the regions most affected by this phenomenon in the country are the eastern provinces, as well as some in the northern part, namely Uíje and Zaire, being also sometimes reached Bengo, Luanda and Cuanza Norte.

"These are the areas in the country most likely to occur," said Domingos do Nascimento, adding that five lightning detectors are expected to be installed, which will cover the provinces of Luanda, Zaire, Uíje, Malanje, Lunda Sul , Bié and Huambo.
