João Lourenço defends the well-being of the populations at the United Nations

João Lourenço reinforced, this Friday, the country's commitment to continue working on sustainable development. The goal of this commitment is that Angola can achieve the goals set, taking into account the 17 Objectives of Sustainable Development, in Agenda 2030.

The President, who was the first of 22 Heads of State to speak at the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, stressed that one of the country's main objectives is to eradicate extreme poverty.

"The Government of Angola attaches great importance to issues related to fighting poverty and raising the well-being and quality of life of the populations," he said, quoted by Angop.

"Of the 70 action programs that are part of Angola's National Development Plan, for the period 2018-2022, 36 have an impact on the goal of eliminating extreme poverty and reducing multidimensional poverty," said the Head of State.

He also stressed that food production is crucial for the country's development, admitting that family food production "constitutes a pillar of enormous relevance in the Angolan Government's efforts to combat poverty.

Among the various programs the Executive has in place, the President highlighted that of social cash transfers that will help about one million and 600 thousand families. "This program, in partnership with the World Bank, and which will extend until the year 2022, includes a financial package equivalent to 420 million dollars," he explained.

Among the various developments achieved by the country, the Head of State highlighted the opening of more than 29 thousand vacancies for general education in just two years: in 2018, the Executive opened more than 19 thousand vacancies for teachers and last year about 10 thousand vacancies were opened.

The health sector has also made progress. According to João Lourenço, in two years, 14,600 places were opened for health professionals (7600 places in 2018 and 7000 in 2019).

In addition, the capacity of the national health system was also strengthened: there was an increase in the number of beds available in hospitals in more than 5000 units.
