Covid-19: Africa with 255 more deaths and 8319 more infections in the last 24 hours

The number of deaths in Africa due to covid-19 has risen in the last 24 hours to 34,327, plus 255, and there are a further 8319 cases of infection, a total of 1,420,629, according to the most recent pandemic data on the continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours the number of recovered in the 55 member states of the organization is now 1,168,444, plus 10,282 cases.

The highest number of infections and deaths continues to occur in southern Africa: 722,376 and 17,322, respectively. In this region, South Africa alone, which is the most affected country on the continent, now accounts for 663,282 cases, 1346 more than in the last 24 hours, and 16,118 deaths, 126 more.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has 305,935 infected people and 10,175 dead, and in West Africa the number of infections is 172,961, with 2574 dead.

The East Africa region now accounts for 162,189 cases and registers 3185 fatalities and in Central Africa 57,168 cases and 1071 deaths are registered, the same since 48 hours ago.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, has 5806 deaths and 102,254 infected and Morocco has 1889 deaths and 105,346 cases.

Algeria follows with 50,217 recorded infections and 1689 fatalities.

Among the six countries most affected are Nigeria, with 57,613 infected and 1,100 dead, the same number as in the last 24 hours, and Ethiopia, which has exceeded 70,000 cases of infection (70,422) and registered 1127 deaths.

Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique in number of cases, which has exceeded the barrier of 7000.

Angola has 155 deaths and 4236 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 5018 infections), Cape Verde (52 deaths and 5337 cases) and Mozambique (45 deaths and 7114 infections).

Guinea-Bissau keeps the 39 dead, and the number of infected is 2324, while Sao Tome and Principe keeps the number of 15 deaths and 908 infected registered in the last 24 hours.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 965,760 deaths and more than 31.3 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
