Africa records 133 more deaths by covid-19 in the last 24 hours

The death toll in Africa due to covid-19 has risen to 33,951 in the last 24 hours, after another 133 fatalities were recorded, with infections reaching 1,407,680, according to official data.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), over the past 24 hours there have been 8494 more cases of infection in the organization's 55 member states. The recovered are now 1,153,967, plus 5389.

Southern Africa continues to record the highest number of cases of infection and deaths: 719,155 and 17,144 respectively. South Africa, the continent's most affected country, now accounts for 661,211 cases and 15,953 deaths.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has 299,661 people infected and has just passed 10,000 deaths (10,032) and in West Africa the number of infections is 172,148, with 2566 fatalities.

The East African region has 159,745 cases and 3138 deaths, while in Central Africa there are 56,971 cases and 1071 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 5770 deaths and 102,015 infected and Morocco counts 1,830 deaths and 101,743 cases. Algeria followed, with 1672 dead and 49,829 cases.

In the six most affected countries are also Nigeria, with 57,242 infected and 1098 killed, and Ethiopia, with 68,820 infected and 1096 dead.

Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique in number of cases.

Angola records 152 deaths and 3991 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 fatalities and 5002 infected), Cape Verde (51 dead and 5257 cases) and Mozambique (43 deaths and 6771 infected).

Guinea-Bissau has maintained 39 deaths and 2303 cases since Thursday, while São Tomé and Príncipe also maintains the number of 15 deaths and 908 infected.
