Covid-19: Africa with 170 dead and twice as many recovered in 24 hours

Africa has registered 170 deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, a total of 32,795, and more than 16,000 people have recovered, one of the highest figures in recent weeks, according to the most recent figures of the pandemic in the continent.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours there have been a further 6441 new cases of infection in the 55 member states of the organization, for a total of 1,359,724, more than half of them in North Africa.

As for the number recovered, there were 16,315, more than double compared to Monday, for a total of 1,106,991.

The highest number of cases and deaths continues to occur in southern Africa, with 705,330 infections and 16,640 deaths. South Africa alone, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 650,749 cases and 15,499 deaths.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 276,096 people infected and 9543 dead and in West Africa the number of infections has risen to 169,007 and the number of deaths to 2531.

The East Africa region has 153,075 cases and 3019 deaths and in Central Africa 56,216 cases and 1062 deaths are counted.

Egypt, which is the second African country with more deaths, after South Africa, registers 5661 deaths and 101,177, followed by Algeria, with 1620 deaths and 48,499 cases.

Morocco has 88,203 infected and 1614 dead.

In the six countries most affected are also Nigeria, with 56,388 infected and 1083 dead, and Ethiopia, with 64,786 infected and 1022 dead.

Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Equatorial Guinea in number of cases.

Angola registers 136 deaths and 3439 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 5000 cases), Cape Verde (45 deaths and 4839 cases), Guinea-Bissau (39 deaths and 2303 cases), Mozambique (35 deaths and 5482 cases) and São Tomé e Príncipe (15 deaths and 906 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 924,968 deaths and more than 29 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
