Africa with 123 dead and 6625 new cases of covid-19 in 24 hours

Africa has registered 123 deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, rising to a total of 32,625 in 1,353,283 cases of infection, according to the most recent pandemic figures on the continent.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours there have been a further 6625 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus in the 55 member states of the organization, half of them in North Africa, and there have been a further 7238 recovered, for a total of 1,090,676.

The highest number of cases and deaths continues to occur in southern Africa, with 703,554 infections and 16,571 deaths. South Africa alone, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 649,793 cases and 15,447 deaths.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 272,667 people infected and 9470 dead and in West Africa the number of infections has risen to 168,574 and the number of deaths to 2518.

The East Africa region has 152,312 cases and passed this Monday the three thousand dead (3005) and in Central Africa there are 56,176 cases and 1061 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with more deaths, after South Africa, has 5648 deaths and 101,009, followed by Algeria, with 1612 deaths and 48,257 cases.

Morocco counts 86,686 infected and 1578 dead.

In the six countries most affected are also Nigeria, with 56,256 infected and 1082 dead, and Ethiopia, with 64,301 infected and passed this Monday the thousand dead (1013).

Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Equatorial Guinea in number of cases.

Angola registers 134 deaths and 3388 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 4996 cases), Cape Verde (44 deaths and 4813 cases), Guinea-Bissau (39 deaths and 2275 cases), Mozambique (35 deaths and 5269 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (15 deaths and 906 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 921,097 deaths and more than 28.8 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
