Covid-19: Africa with 30,294 dead and about 257,000 active cases

Africa has registered 219 deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 30,294, with about 257,000 active cases, according to the most recent pandemic figures on the continent.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours there have been 8109 more cases in the 55 member states of the organization and 8668 more have been recovered.

In total, the continent has 1,267,656 cases of infection and 1,009,824 patients have recovered, thus there are 257,832 active cases in the continent.

The highest number of cases and deaths continues to occur in Southern Africa, with 677,408 infections and 15,410 deaths. South Africa alone, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 630,595 cases and 14,389 deaths.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 236,343 people infected and 8694 dead and in West Africa the number of infections has risen to 162,094 and the number of deaths to 2411.

In the East Africa region, the number of covid-19 cases is 137,354 and 2736 deaths, and in Central Africa 54,457 cases and 1043 deaths are counted this Thursday.

Egypt, which is the second African country with more deaths, after South Africa, registers 5461 deaths and 99,280 cases, followed by Algeria, with 1525 deaths and 45,158 cases.

Morocco counts this Thursday 65,453 infected and 1216 dead.

In the six countries most affected are also Nigeria, with 54,463 infected and 1027 dead, and Sudan, where 13,189 infected and 823 dead are recorded.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Mozambique has 4117 cases and 25 deaths, Cape Verde has 4048 cases and 41 deaths, and Angola has 2777 cases and 112 deaths.

Guinea-Bissau has 2245 infections and 38 deaths and São Tomé e Príncipe has 896 cases and 15 deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 4965 infected people and 83 deaths, according to data released on Tuesday.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The coronavirus pandemic that causes covid-19 has already caused at least 857,824 deaths and infected more than 25.8 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
