Africa with 244 more deaths in the last 24 hours, but fewer new covid-19 infections

Africa has counted 244 deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours, but new infections have fallen and are again outpaced by the number of patients recovered, according to official data.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours there have been 244 deaths (85 more than in the previous year), 7322 new infections (838 less) and 10,160 recovered patients (3479 more) in the 55 member states of the organization.

In total, the continent has 29,833 deaths and 985,803 recovered patients in an accumulated total of 1,252,552 cases of infection.

The highest number of cases and deaths continues to occur in southern Africa, with 672,586 infections and 15,147 deaths. South Africa alone, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 627,041 cases and 14,149 deaths.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 230,555 people infected and 8542 dead and in West Africa the number of infections has risen to 160,638 and the number of deaths to 2389.

In the East Africa region, the number of covid-19 cases is 134,367 and 2691 deaths and in Central Africa 54,406 cases and 1064 deaths are counted this Tuesday.

Egypt, which is the second country with the most deaths, after South Africa, registers 5421 deaths and 98,939 cases, followed by Algeria, with 1510 deaths and 44,494 cases.

Morocco counts this Tuesday 62,590 infected and 1141 dead.

In the six countries most affected are also Nigeria, which has 54,008 infected and 1013 dead and Sudan, where 13,189 infected and 823 dead.

Among the Lusophone African countries, Mozambique has 3916 cases and 23 deaths, Cape Verde has 3884 cases and 40 deaths and Angola has 2654 cases and 108 deaths.

Guinea-Bissau has 2245 infections and 38 deaths and São Tomé e Príncipe has 896 cases and 15 deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 4941 infested people and 83 deaths, according to the most recent data, which reports Friday.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The coronavirus pandemic that causes covid-19 has already caused at least 851,071 deaths and infected more than 25.5 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
