Sonangol says end of fuel subsidy awaits government decision

The chairman of the Board of Directors of Sonangol said this Monday, in Luanda, that the technical work for the removal of fuel subsidies has been completed, and the final decision is now up to the Government.

:

The subsidies cost the oil company more than US $ 1.6 million annually and Sebastião Gaspar Martins commented on the matter, which has been put forward by the Government for some years, on the sidelines of a meeting promoted today by the Ministry of Mineral Resources Oil and Gas with some agencies of social communication.

“All the technical work is done and now it is up to the final consultation, to be made between the decision-making bodies”, said Sebastião Gaspar Martins in statements to Rádio Nacional de Angola, reiterating that “it is up to all the bodies that interfere in the decision, in proper time for this to occur, say when this change can be made ”.

The official said he believed that the process could be carried out gradually, stressing that the weight of this subsidy is "very high".

"We have had effects that reach 1.5 billion dollars or 2 billion dollars / year", he said.

In March this year, Finance Minister Vera Daves guaranteed that the withdrawal of fuel price subsidies will be made, but with due caution in view of its impact.

"That is why we are reflecting so far, we want to prevent the impact from being too strong, we want to ensure that the impact is as small as possible," said the minister at the time, explaining that this is why the decision has not yet been taken.
