The arrests were also made as part of investigations into the riots that left at least 30 dead, more than 200 injured, and 1500 arrested between July 28 and August 1.
Following the arrests of the president and vice-president of the National Association of Taxi Drivers of Angola (ANATA), Francisco Paciente and Rodrigo Luciano Catimba, respectively, the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) reported the arrest of the leaders of the Angolan Taxi Drivers Association (ATA), Francisco Eduardo, of the Angolan Community Taxi Cooperative (CTCA), Rafael Ginga Inácio, and of the Freitas Taxi and Motorcyclist Cooperative (CTMF), António Alexandre Freitas.
The arrests were made this Sunday in Luanda "for acts that constitute the crimes of criminal association, incitement to violence, attacks on transportation safety, and terrorism, substantiated by strong evidence of their involvement in promoting acts of vandalism and disorder against public and private property and services," the SIC explained in a statement.
Angola recorded acts of vandalism, violence, and looting last week following a strike called by taxi drivers in protest against rising fuel prices and, consequently, public transportation fares.
