Missing priest in Huambo found dead, main suspect is victim's father

The Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) announced this Wednesday that the priest who disappeared in Huambo last week was found dead, with the main suspect in the death being the victim's father, who has since been arrested.

:

Father Vasco Gonguela Samba, vicar of the Parish of São José, had been missing since July 31st. His body was found this Wednesday, submerged, in the Kwando River dam, the SIC (Civil Service) reported in a statement.

The circumstances of his death have been investigated by the SIC Huambo provincial directorate, after the Archdiocese of Huambo reported the disappearance. This culminated in the arrest on Tuesday of Amândio dos Santos Samba, the victim's father, "due to strong evidence of homicide."

The body was found a day later and removed to the Huambo General Hospital morgue for forensic examination, following an on-site judicial inspection.

"The detainee will be presented to the Public Prosecutor's Office for further legal proceedings, while other investigations continue to properly clarify this crime," the authorities added, appealing for the family and the Catholic community to remain calm while the case unfolds.
