Cooperation between Angola and Madagascar entered a new era this Thursday, with the signing of seven bilateral cooperation agreements in various sectors. The signing ceremony took place in Luanda and was witnessed by the President of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina – who is currently on a state visit to Angola –, and by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

Of the instruments signed today, the highlight is the agreement that formalizes the Bilateral Joint Commission, a crucial instrument for implementing cooperation in sectors such as oil and gas, mining, political consultations, visa exemption for diplomatic passports, also signed this Thursday, and providing the opportunity to sign other agreements in the future, writes Angop.

On the occasion, the Head of State praised the signing of these instruments, as they represent a milestone in the history of cooperation between the two countries, which had been "dormant" for several years.

In statements made at a press conference, quoted by Angop, João Lourenço said that this is a challenging time to make up for lost time, with a view to boosting relations in favor of the economic development of both countries.

Given this situation, the President of the Republic said that it is imperative to operationalize the Bilateral Joint Commission with the completion of its first meeting, as it is a fundamental tool for materializing the agreements signed and enabling future agreements.

Andry Rajoelina highlighted that the signing of these agreements represents the start of cooperation between the two countries and strengthens South-South cooperation, while also adding value to Pan-Africanism.

Quoted by Angop, he also pointed out that both countries have great potential, particularly in mineral resources, which can be used to benefit the development of both nations, and added that it is important for African countries to continue to promote solidarity among themselves, given that it is on the continent itself that responses to the challenges that continue to impact the populations should be sought, through effective collaboration between the countries.

As part of the visit of the President of Madagascar to Angola, the Presidential Palace hosted talks between the delegations of Angola and Madagascar this Thursday.

At the opening of the dialogue between the delegations, João Lourenço highlighted the country's willingness to collaborate with Madagascar in the mining sector, in order to ensure that Madagascar makes the most of the opportunities in this area of development, with the aim of boosting its economic growth.

According to the Head of State, Madagascar has taken significant measures to increase the visibility and importance of the mining sector, and highlighted that Angola will use all its experience in these fields, given that it has been the main driver of the country's economy for many years.

However, João Lourenço stressed that cooperation between the two countries should also look at other sectors, such as agriculture and tourism, where both countries can share information to boost the growth of their economies.

Highlighting that the two countries have signed instruments in the oil and gas, mining and energy sectors, João Lourenço pointed out that the instrument for the officialisation of the Bilateral Joint Commission, which will be the basis for relaunching relations, is essential for the implementation of these agreements.

He therefore challenged the diplomacy of both countries to work hard to create the necessary conditions for the first meeting of this commission, writes Angop.

João Lourenço also recalled that the visit by his counterpart from Madagascar took place just a few months after he had travelled to that African country for the inauguration of Andry Rajoelina, at which time relevant aspects of cooperation were discussed.

During his visit to Angola, the President of Madagascar also paid tribute to the first President of the Republic, Agostinho Neto. This Thursday, Andry Rajoelina laid a wreath at Agostinho Neto's sarcophagus, as well as visited the Dr. António Agostinho Neto Memorial and signed the guest book.

After meeting with João Lourenço and witnessing the signing of the agreements, the President of Madagascar's agenda for this Thursday also included a visit to the National Assembly and a visit to the Luanda Refinery.
