The Portuguese Government welcomed this Wednesday the ceasefire agreement reached on Tuesday in Luanda between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRCongo) and Rwanda, mediated by Angola.

:

“Portugal welcomes the ceasefire agreement reached yesterday in Luanda (…) mediated by Angola. We congratulate the Republic of Angola for this important contribution to the stability of the Great Lakes region, which is important to maintain and preserve”, reads the message from the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs published on social media.

The ceasefire agreement agreed in Luanda will come into effect at midnight next Sunday, August 4th.

The decision, announced by the press office of the Angolan Presidency, was taken on Tuesday during the second ministerial meeting between the two countries, mediated by Angola.

The ceasefire will be supervised by the reinforced ‘ad hoc’ Verification Mechanism.

Before the start of the talks, the delegations led by the heads of diplomacy of the DR Congo and Rwanda were at the Presidential Palace in Luanda, where they were received by President João Lourenço, mandated by the African Union to mediate the peace process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
