According to a statement from CIPRA, to which VerAngola had access, the head of state received the surgeon at the Presidential Palace, in an audience that took place late Tuesday afternoon, "precisely the day on which the famous surgeon performed the first operation in Angola using a robot".

This first robotic surgery – successfully performed at the Cardeal Don Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital on a patient with prostate cancer and which lasted about an hour and a half – is just the beginning. According to the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, within a year, the general hospitals of Cabinda and the Azancot de Menezes Maternity and Child Hospital will also be equipped to perform robotic surgeries.

The minister, who was speaking to the press at the end of the meeting between the President and the surgeon, highlighted that in Sub-Saharan Africa, only South Africa had this type of surgery available and that with the surgery performed on Tuesday – supervised by Vitul Patel, who was accompanied by foreign and Angolan specialists – Angola becomes the second country to perform robotic surgery.

"These are the results of the Executive's commitment to improving the health sector, to better serve the population", said Sílvia Lutucuta, who, quoted by Angop, highlighted the fact that the Executive has been investing in infrastructure, technology and human capital.

On the occasion, Sílvia Lutucuta also highlighted the skills of surgeon Vipul Patel, stating that he is a world-renowned urologist oncologist who, throughout his professional career, has performed more than 18 thousand robotic surgeries.

Regarding the Angolan teams involved in this type of operation, she said that they are varied and include doctors, nurses, diagnostic technicians, IT specialists, among others.

Quoted by Angop, the minister announced that the country has already purchased two robots, one to perform surgeries and the other to train professionals, adding that to perform robotic surgeries, the ministry she heads will have the support of Global Robotics, headed by Vipul Patel, for a period of five years.

After this historic feat, more surgeries of this kind will follow. According to Sílvia Lutucuta, this Wednesday, the second robotic surgery to treat prostate cancer will be performed, and she announced a gradual increase in the number of operations from September.

Quoted by Jornal de Angola, the minister also revealed that the sector will soon begin to use gynecological robotic surgery in general, thoracic, neurosurgery and orthopedic surgeries.

She also mentioned that they also intend to invest in the area of cardiology: "There is a lot of work to be done worldwide with this technology, including in sectors such as cardiology, which we will also invest in when we are ready".

According to the CIPRA note, the practice of medicine in the country established this Tuesday "a dividing line, marking a before and after, with the introduction of one of the most advanced technologies in humanity, the cure for prostate cancer through robotic surgery".

Now that robotic surgery has been launched in the country, "the next step is to train Angolan professionals for the necessary autonomy, with 15 professionals expected to travel to the United States of America to master the secrets of this cutting-edge technology".
