Catumbela Airport may obtain certification later this year and be able to receive international flights

The Chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA) of the Sociedade Gestora de Aeroportos (SGA), José Venâncio, informed that the SGA is working to ensure that Catumbela International Airport can be certified by the end of this year, whose certification will no longer the infrastructure of open doors for international flights.

However, if this year the airport is not certified, the official pointed out the first quarter of next year as a possible deadline for this to happen. "Although this year we will not be able to obtain certification, at least in the first quarter of 2024 we will achieve it", assured José Venâncio, in statements to the press – quoted by Angop – at the end of the first ordinary meeting of the society outside the capital.

On the occasion, the official informed that there are certain measures that take longer, such as screening areas, matters related to security, cars to fight fires, etc, writes Angop.

Cited by Angop, José Venâncio also made it known that there is a set of technical matters that were sent by the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) to the SGA, which currently exceed its capacity to act and that of the provincial government.

Thus, he exemplified with the division of domestic and international traffic, and for this, action should be taken to adjust the departure and arrival lounges, in order to respond to international flights.

On the occasion, the PCA of the SGA expressed optimism, referring that the complications have already been overcome by 50 percent and added that the complications that are not within his reach will be forwarded to the Ministry of Transport with a view to their resolution, writes Angop.

Named 'Paulo Teixeira Jorge', the airport is located in Benguela. Inaugurated in 2012, this infrastructure has a runway of 3700 meters, with capacity for 2.2 million annual passengers.
