Future president of parliament asks deputies for a “sense of state”

The future president of the National Assembly, according to data from the National Electoral Commission (CNE), said this Monday that the management of a parliament without a constitutional majority will be different and there is a “sense of state” and “patriotism” on the part of the deputies.

:

"We are aware that nothing will be the same, but our list of candidates for deputies is a multiform list with cadres of recognized capacity and we believe that common sense will prevail", Carolina Cerqueira, a candidate of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) for the post of president of the National Assembly, told Lusa.

"The sense of state and patriotism will prevail" among the deputies, confides the leader of the MPLA, a party that won 124 seats out of 220 seats that make up the national parliament.

The results of the August 24 elections, announced this Monday by the CNE, indicate that the MPLA has lost its two-thirds constitutional majority and a large increase in the main opposition party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola ( UNITA).

About her likely election as president of parliament, the first woman in the country to hold that position, Carolina Cerqueira promised to "fulfill with zeal, responsibility and a great sense of mission, plus this mission given by the decision of the polls".

In the future, "I will have as a fundamental mission to strengthen the democratic rule of law and the great role that the National Assembly plays in revitalizing and strengthening our democracy and in contributing to the common good", said Carolina Cerqueira.
