New vice-president calls for “prosperity of all angolans without exception”

The future vice president of Angola, Esperança Costa, thanked the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola in the August 24 elections and said that the party only complied with the decision of the National Electoral Commission (CNE).

Questioned by the Lusa agency about the opposition's complaints against the results announced by the CNE, Esperança Costa limited herself to saying that the MPLA claimed victory because the official authorities indicated so.

"It has nothing to do with us, it has to do with the CNE, we are a party that assumed the results that the CNE released", said the new ruler.

"I am very pleased and grateful to all the Angolan people, to all MPLA militants and sympathizers who went to the polls and cast their vote for our party, our leader, our candidate João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço", he said, insisting that now the country must be focused on governance.

"We are available to give full support to our president, to continue to consolidate peace in our country, for the stability, socio-economic development of Angola and for the prosperity of all Angolans without exception", she added.

The MPLA won the elections in Angola with 51.17 percent of the votes against 43.95 percent for the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), according to the final results announced by the CNE.

According to the data presented, 44.82 percent of the 14.4 million voters voted, with 1.67 percent of white votes and 1.15 percent of null votes.

The CNE plenary thus proclaimed the President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço, head of the MPLA list, the most voted party and vice-president, Esperança da Costa, second on the MPLA list.

The published results confirm the provisional data announced on Friday that already pointed to the victory of the MPLA, which UNITA contests.
