More than 130 family doctors return to Angola after specialization in Cuba

A group of 136 Angolan doctors, who traveled to Cuba three months ago, returned to the country after completing their training in the specialty of general and family medicine.

The doctors completed this stage of training as part of the Human Resources Training Project for Universal Health Coverage.

Speaking at the reception ceremony for the newly arrived professionals, the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, highlighted the barriers and challenges that the sector has overcome in order to specialise more than a hundred healthcare professionals.

"Primary healthcare is the gateway to any healthcare system", stressed the minister, who also recognised that, in order for the country to have a gateway with the necessary skills, it is necessary to train healthcare teams.

In a statement to which VerAngola had access, the minister considered that in terms of staffing, the Ministry of Health has already admitted around 46 thousand professionals and, of these, more than 80 percent were placed in the primary network.

Sílvia Lutucuta wants to see training aligned with primary healthcare and advocates an infrastructure programme dedicated essentially to basic care.
