UNITA says it goes ahead in the count and contradicts CNE data

The number two on the lists of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Abel Chivukuvuku, said that provisional data collected from Wednesday's elections point to a victory for the party.

:

"Our polling centers [give] clear provisional indicators of UNITA's winning trend in all provinces of our country," Chivukuvuku said at a press conference.

As an example, Chivukuvuku indicated that, in the municipalities of Luanda province, the ruling party (Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola, MPLA) won in only one municipality.

According to Filomeno Vieira Lopes, leader of the Democratic Bloc, a party that joined the UNITA lists, current data, in Luanda province alone, indicate that in 60 percent of the numbers recorded by the party, 66 percent of votes are in the largest formation of the opposition.

Moments earlier, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced different data, with a third of the votes counted, which, according to the authorities, indicate a victory for the MPLA with 60 percent of the votes.

Faced with the confrontation of such different numbers, Abel Chivukuvuku maintained that the process "has to be peaceful": "we are all Angolans, we are all actors in the history of Angola, we are all interested in everything going well".

According to Filomeno Vieira Lopes, the "system is set up to be verified" and, "in case of divergence, there are contestations and confrontation" in Organs respective bodies.

Nelito Ekuikui, UNITA's provincial secretary for Luanda, said that there are several cases of polling stations that have not yet published the summary minutes resulting from the counting of the polling station members, supervised by party delegates.

"There are situations in which party delegates refuse to sign the minutes because they do not correspond to what happened", stated Neito Ekuikui.

Chivukuvuku added, at the same press conference, that five delegates were still being held and contested the release of a poll on Wednesday night by the Public Television of Angola (TPA), in violation of the electoral law itself.

"The National Assembly of the Republic of Angola approved a law that determines that polls cannot be published during electoral periods" and TPA presented "alleged polls that would give an advantage to the ruling party".

"The state legislates (the electoral law) and violates it", criticized Chivukuvuku.
