Police “ready” to stop subversion and call for non-stay at polling stations

The general commander of the police said this Monday that the security forces "are able to respond to any subversion attempt" during Wednesday's elections and urged citizens "not to remain" in the assemblies after the vote.

According to Arnaldo Carlos, voters in general, "the law requires civic and orderly conduct, and the presence at polling stations of intoxicated individuals and those who have already exercised their right to vote is prohibited."

"After voting, each citizen can return to their daily routine, with no need to stay at the polling station, because all political parties competing in the 2022 elections have their representatives at polling stations to deal with matters relating to the ballot", said this Monday the general commander.

Arnaldo Carlos, who was speaking this Monday at the formal act to assess the state of readiness of the staff to guarantee the security of the elections on Wednesday, 24 August, said that the defense and security forces are prepared.

These are also prepared to respond to any attempt to subvert public order and tranquility, so "it appeals to the population to avoid involvement in acts that could disturb the functioning of polling stations" or "violate the essential presuppositions of order and public safety".

The official thus alluded to the "Votou, Sentou" movement, promoted by some opposition parties and civil society, which defend the permanence of voters in the vicinity of the assemblies after the vote.

The national police forces to guarantee the security of the fifth general elections were presented this Monday at the Luanda Operative Unit and personnel from all bodies assigned to the Ministry of the Interior were on parade and guaranteed readiness and that they are in a state of prevention at 100 Percent.

The mobilization of the entire police force is justified, according to Arnaldo Carlos, "taking into account the complexity of the process and the need to guarantee the full execution of the security plan" for the elections, he stressed.

"The state of 100 percent prevention was determined for all the staff mobilized for this operation, which fundamentally involves the protection and security of the installations and assets of the electoral administration bodies, the security of the polling stations and, in general terms, that of the voters on polling day and beyond," he explained.

As a legal imperative, he noted, on polling day, public security forces "will be placed at a distance of 100 meters from polling stations, in a state of readiness and redoubled surveillance to avoid any act that jeopardizes their functioning and the voter safety".

For the police commissioner, "the lessons learned from the previous elections, give the certainty that the moment will also be festive and the voting act will take place in an environment of redoubled civility and order".

Arnaldo Carlos also said that the public security situation in the country "is stable" as there are "decreases in crime statistics that generally influence the population's sense of security".

"Fortunately, this security context contributed to the pre-campaign and electoral campaign periods, which ends today, taking place in a peaceful, civic and orderly manner", he noted.

"Up until now we have witnessed a true celebration of democracy", signaled the senior police officer on this last day of the electoral campaign, which began last July 24th.

The general commander assured that national borders "are being intensively patrolled, and on August 24, all border movements in and out of the country will not be allowed, from the opening to the closing of polling stations".

He also urged the staff to adopt a behavior that "expresses the attitude and professional rigor that characterize any military institution, fundamentally a posture of cohesion, discipline, organization, respect and readiness".

Eight political forces, namely seven parties and a coalition of parties, compete in these elections that will elect the President of the Republic, the vice-president and the deputies to the National Assembly.
