Robbers take the life of José Simões, judoka member of the national team

José Simões, or Mestre Pitchu – as he was known in the sporting world of judo – was killed this Tuesday, in Luanda, by alleged assailants.

Wessel Oosthuizen:

The judoka, a member of the national team, was one of the best known faces of Grupo Desportivo da Banca, having also represented the emblem of Himoka.

According to Angop, which cites sources close to the athlete, the homicide occurred this Tuesday morning, when elements still unidentified shot José Simões with a firearm, in an attempt to steal the belongings he was carrying.

Colleagues report that the judoka left his home, in the 'Cinquentinha' area (Luanda Sul, Viana) and was going to work, having been surprised by the robbers.

José Simões, 41 years old, was born on February 22, 1980. He distinguished himself in the world of judo, having started his career at Clube do Himoka, passing by Grupo Desportivo da Banca and BKE, in teams in the provinces of Huila and Lunda Norte.

The highlight of his career was the Pan-African Games held in 2007 in Algeria. The Angolan athlete, representing the national team, won his category, -66kg.
