Covid-19: Africa with 1009 more deaths and 35,959 more cases in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 1009 more covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 191,818 deaths since the pandemic began, and 35,959 new cases, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) bulletin released this Thursday, the cumulative total of cases is 7,620,106, while that of recovered cases is 6,739,014, up 27,608 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with a cumulative 3,632,538 infected and 100,467 deaths associated with the disease since the start of the pandemic on the continent.

In this region, South Africa alone, the country most affected by the pandemic on the African continent, already counts 2,722,202 infected and has exceeded 80,000 deaths (80,469 deaths) in the last 24 hours.

North Africa, with 2,291,315 cases and 61,602 deaths, is the second most affected region on the continent, with a total of 55 countries.

East Africa has 891,742 infections and 18,556 deaths, and the West African region has 588,683 infections and exceeded 8,000 deaths (8007) in the last 24 hours.

Central Africa remains the region of the continent with the fewest infections and deaths: 215,828 cases and 3186 deaths.

After South Africa, the most affected country is Tunisia, with 22,860 deaths and 647,483 infected, followed by Egypt, with 16,691 deaths and 286,938 cases.

It is followed by Morocco, with 12,079 deaths and 829,137 cases of infection, and Algeria, with 5096 deaths and 193,171.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique remains the most affected by covid-19, with 1822 deaths and 144,032 cases, followed by Angola with 1176 deaths and a total of 46,539 people infected by the disease.

Cape Verde registers 307 deaths associated with the disease and 34,919 positive cases, Equatorial Guinea 123 deaths and 9173 cases, Guinea-Bissau registers a total of 110 deaths and 5634 infected. São Tomé and Príncipe, meanwhile, has remained at 37 deaths for some time, but has recorded 2555 infections in the cumulative total since the start of the pandemic.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection, on February 28.

Covid-19 has caused at least 4,451,888 deaths worldwide, among more than 213.1 million infections by the new coronavirus recorded since the start of the pandemic, according to the most recent assessment by the Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil or Peru.
