Covid-19: Africa with 862 more deaths and over 43,000 cases in 24 hours

Africa recorded 43,146 more cases of infection with the new coronavirus this Thursday, bringing the total to 7,388,784, which resulted in 862 more deaths, to 186,367 deaths, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) bulletin issued this morning, southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 3,525,711 infected and 97,702 deaths associated with covid-19.

Within this region, South Africa alone, the country most affected by the pandemic on the African continent, accounts for 2,638,981 infected and 78,377 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, has reached 2,208,519 cases and 59,714 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa accounts for 868,321 infections and 18,085 deaths, and the West African region records 573,185 infections and 7691 deaths.

Central Africa is the region of the continent with the fewest infections and deaths: 213,048 cases and 3175 deaths.

Tunisia, the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, registers 22,148 deaths and 629,702 cases, followed by Egypt, with 16,638 deaths and 285,700 infected, and Morocco, which has the second highest number of infections in the continent, 782,097 cases, but fewer deaths than the previous two countries, with 11,345 deaths associated with the disease.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique registers 1761 deaths and 140,765 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic and Angola counts 1125 deaths associated with the disease and 45,175 infected accumulated.

Cape Verde records 300 disease-associated deaths and 34,529 infections, Equatorial Guinea 123 deaths and 9010 cases, Guinea-Bissau counts 95 deaths and 5,305 infections, and São Tomé and Príncipe 37 deaths and 2,496 infections.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

Covid-19 has caused at least 4,381,911 deaths worldwide, among more than 208.5 million infections by the new coronavirus recorded since the start of the pandemic, according to the most recent tally by Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil or Peru.
