Covid-19: Africa with 802 more deaths and 27,705 cases in 24 hours

Africa has recorded 802 more covid-19-associated deaths and 27,705 new infections in 24 hours, now totaling 183,763 deaths and 7,314,632 cases since the pandemic began, according to the most recent official data for the region.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) bulletin issued this morning, southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 3,493,867 infected and 96,573 deaths associated with covid-19.

Within this region, South Africa alone accounts for 2,613,569 infected and 77,440 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in the covid-19 numbers, has reached 2,179,795 cases and 59,232 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa accounts for 861,064 infections and 17,985 deaths, and the West African region records 567,291 infections and 7600 deaths.

Central Africa is the region of the continent with the fewest infections and deaths: 212,615 cases and 3175 deaths.

Tunisia, the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, records 22,025 deaths and 626,750 cases, followed by Egypt, with 16,625 deaths and 285,465 infected, and Morocco, which has the second highest number of infections in the entire continent, 763,353 cases, but fewer deaths than the previous two countries, with 11,119 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the most affected countries are also Ethiopia, with 4489 deaths and 289,962 infections, and Algeria, with 4830 deaths and 187,968 infected.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique registers 1731 deaths and 139,038 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic and Angola counts 1103 deaths associated with the disease and 44,731 infected accumulated.

Cape Verde has 300 disease-related deaths and 34,407 infections, Equatorial Guinea has 123 deaths and 8,972 cases, Guinea-Bissau has 90 deaths and 5,123 infections, and São Tomé and Príncipe has 37 deaths and 2,489 infections.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

Covid-19 has caused at least 4,361,805 deaths worldwide, among more than 207.19 million infections by the new coronavirus recorded since the start of the pandemic, according to the most recent tally by Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil and Peru.
