Covid-19: Africa exceeds six million recovered and counts 678 more dead

Africa has recorded 678 more covid-19 associated deaths in the past 24 hours and exceeds the six million patient recovery barrier, according to the latest official data on the pandemic in the region.

According to the most recent bulletin from the African Union Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the number of covid-19 associated deaths is now 173,836.

The continent records 6,857,642 cases, including 33,626 in the last 24, and 6,004,395 recovered (up 25,857).

On this continent, Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 3,297,429 infected and 90,797 covid-19 associated deaths.

Within this region, South Africa alone accounts for 2,484,009 infected and 73,415 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in the covid-19 numbers, has surpassed the two million cases barrier in the last 24 hours, reaching 2,003,172 infections and 55,652 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa accounts for 809,590 infections and 17,178 deaths, and the West African region records 540,717 infections and 7045 deaths.

Central Africa is the region of the continent with the fewest infections and deaths: 206,734 cases and 3164 deaths.

Tunisia, the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, records 20,410 deaths and 599,594 cases, followed by Egypt, with 16,550 deaths and 284,472 infected, and Morocco, which has the second highest number of infections in the entire continent, 653,286 cases, but fewer deaths than the previous two countries, with 10,015 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the most affected countries are also Ethiopia, with 4403 deaths and 281,811 infections, and Algeria, with 4404 deaths and 176,724 infected.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique registers 1526 deaths and 127,425 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic and Angola counts 1026 deaths associated with the disease and 43,158 infected accumulated.

Cape Verde has 298 disease-related deaths and 33,906 infections, Equatorial Guinea has 123 deaths and 8928 cases, Guinea-Bissau has 79 deaths and 4629 infections, and São Tomé and Príncipe has 37 deaths and 2463 infections.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has made at least 4,247,424 deaths worldwide, among more than 200.1 million cases of infection with the new coronavirus, since the WHO detected the disease in China in late December 2019, according to AFP's tally based on official data.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil and Peru.
