Shoprite announces departure from Nigeria after sales drop

South African retail group Shoprite has announced that it will close its operations in Nigeria after reporting a 1.4 percent drop in the annual global income of its supermarkets on the African continent.

:

A multinational retailer, which entered the Nigerian market in 2005, said the reported financial results do not reflect operations in Nigeria, as they will be used as a "discontinued operation".

The group indicated "supermarkets 'non-RSA' (excluding Nigeria), which contributed 11.6 percent to the group's sales, recorded a decline in sales of 1.4 percent in the year," according to information on the market for a period of 52 weeks until June 28, which Lusa had access to.

"The steady 6.3 percent growth in cash sales in the second half of the year had a significant impact on containment restrictions in all 14 African countries where it operates," the group said.

Shoprite refers to confinement restrictions related to store closings, social distance, transportation restrictions, people movement, retail hours, labor force restrictions and the alcohol trade "that impact different regions to varying degrees and at different times ".

South African market analysts believe that, as group operations in African countries, especially in Angola, they can also be discontinued to strengthen group business in South Africa.

However, questioned by Lusa in this regard, the South African group, based in Cape Town, listens to a comment or the future of commercial operations in Angola and Mozambique, taking into account the financial results under analysis.

"We are in a closed period and, therefore, we are not in a position to comment, in addition to referring to information released publicly in the Operational Update of the Shoprite Group, yesterday, August 3, 2020," he told Lusa or the South African retail group .

In South Africa, the Group reported annual growth of 8.7 percent (including alcoholic beverages) sustained by a "strong second half" in which sales grew by 7.5 percent.

"As a result of confinement, customer visits decrease 7.4 percent in the year, however, average spending on purchases increases 18.4 percent", refers to the South African retail group, still showing growth 2.3 percent annual volume.
