Covid-19: Africa accounts for 28,596 deaths from the disease

The number of deaths by covid-19 in Africa is this Thursday of 28,596, 320 more than on Wednesday, in a universe of 1,212,012 infected in the continent, whose southern and northern regions are the most affected, according to official data.

In the last 24 hours, a further 9094 infected people have been registered, with 942,249 declared as recovered, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), which gathers the most recent data from official reports from the 55 member countries of the organization.

The highest number of cases and deaths of covid-19 continues to occur in southern Africa, with 658,144 infected and 14,444 fatalities.

In this region, South Africa, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 615,701 infected patients and 13,502 deaths.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 218,777 people infected and 8194 dead and in West Africa the number of cases rose to 157,319 and the number of fatalities to 2358.

In the East Africa region, the number of covid-19 cases is this Thursday of 124,805 and 2570 deaths and in Central Africa there are 52,967 cases of infection and 1030 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second country with the most deaths, after South Africa, has 5317 dead and 97,825 infected, followed by Algeria with 1452 dead and 43,063 infected. Morocco has a higher number of registered infectees, 55,864, but a lower number of deaths than neighbouring Algeria: 984 deaths.

Among the five countries most affected are Nigeria, with 53,021 infected and 1010 dead, and Sudan: 12,974 infected and 819 dead, a number that has not been updated for several days.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of cases (with 3630 cases and 38 deaths), followed by Mozambique (3508 cases and 21 deaths), Angola (2332 cases and 103 deaths), according to data released by the official authorities of these countries.

Cases in Guinea-Bissau (2149 infections and 33 deaths) and Sao Tome and Principe (892 cases and 15 deaths) remain relatively stable compared to recent days.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), registered 4928 infected people and 83 deaths, a number that has remained since the last update on 23 August.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 809,000 deaths and infected more than 23.4 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
