Covid-19: Africa exceeds 1.2 million cases

Africa has surpassed in the last 24 hours the 1.2 million infected by the new coronavirus, almost doubling the infections in a little more than a month, and accounting for 342 more deaths in relation to the previous day, according to official data.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), which gathers the data of the 55 members of this organization, says that the region now has 1,202,918 infected, 7621 more than Tuesday.

By mid-July, covid-19 cases in Africa were roughly half as high (625,702 as of July 15).

In relation to the deadly victims, they now number 28,934, 342 more than the previous day.

In the region, 931,057 infected people have been reported as having recovered from the disease.

Southern Africa has the highest number of cases and deaths due to the new coronavirus: 654,558 infected and 14,226 dead.

South Africa alone, the most affected country in the continent and the fifth in the world, has 613,017 cases and 13,308 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 216,099 infected and 8130 dead, followed by West Africa: 156,604 infected and 2348 dead.

East Africa accounts for 122,782 cases and 2545 deaths due to covid-19, while Central Africa accounts for 52,875 infected and 1027 dead from the new coronavirus.

Egypt, which is the second country with more deaths, after South Africa, has 5298 dead and 97,619 infected, followed by Algeria, with 1443 dead and 42,672 infected.

Among the five countries most affected are Nigeria, with 52,800 infected and 1007 dead, and Sudan: 12,974 infected and 819 dead.

Among Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of cases (with 3568 cases and 37 deaths), followed by Mozambique (3508 cases and 37 deaths), Angola (2283 cases and 102 deaths), according to data released by the official authorities of these countries.

The cases in Guinea-Bissau (2205 infections and 34 deaths) and Sao Tome and Principe (891 cases and 15 deaths) were those released by the official authorities of these countries on Monday.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), updated the data last 23rd and registered 4926, an increase of 34 people compared to the 4892 infected recorded on August 1, and 83 deaths, a number it maintains since the beginning of the month.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 809,000 deaths and infected more than 23.4 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
